Join us in a unique opportunity to participate in a one-year mentored assessment project of your choice within a supportive liberal arts faculty community.
About this opportunity
Our school is part of an inter-institutional collaboration among six Midwest colleges (Beloit, Carleton, Grinnell, Macalester, Monmouth, and St. Olaf) on the project called Making Assessment Work for Liberal Arts Colleges in the 21st Century, which is supported by a FaCE grant (Faculty Career Enhancement) awarded by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM). This grant employs a faculty-development framework in which participants complete meaningful, self-selected assessment projects with support from experts and peers. We will build an inter-institutional community of practice within a safe environment so participants can dialogue about solving challenging assessment problems.
How do I benefit by participating?
You can work on a personally meaningful assessment project within a supportive environment. You will learn fundamental assessment principles at a kick-off event and practice with an experienced assessment mentor over the year. You can take advantage of periodic assessment learning opportunities throughout the year. You will be able to tackle your classroom level, program level, or institutional level assessment goals with confidence and share your learning at a Midwest Liberal Arts assessment conference.
What do I need to do?
You decide how much time you are willing to devote to the project you choose. You will be engaging in the community of practice with colleagues from our school and other institutions. You should plan to a) attend the Kickoff on February 28-29, 2020, b) choose an individual or group assessment project, c) work with your mentor at least 4 times during the year, d) participate in your choice of available virtual learning opportunities (e.g. webinars about assessment, virtual book clubs, Twitter chats, discussions, and peer review), and e) attend a 2-day assessment conference in Spring 2021 in Grinnell. You can work individually or in a group on any assessment project that interests you at the course, program, department, or institutional level.
How do I sign up?
All continuing faculty are eligible for this opportunity. Spaces are limited. To be considered, please apply by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 20. You may apply by either a) completing the online application form or b) emailing Vanessa Preast at preastva@grinnell.edu and describing your interest in and motivation for being involved in 200 words or less. The Grinnell College grant leaders will review the applications and notify you by January 15 whether you have been accepted into the program.
